Apple have lowered the drawbridge and their maiden wearable device – the Apple Watch is now available to preorder. This undoubtedly has hordes of Apple fans over the world rabid in expectation. Truth be told we're pretty excited too, as we've been busy in our lair devising the world's first wearable device for musicians.
Good people, let us introduce you to our latest labour of love – Pro Metronome for Apple Watch.
So what's it all about then? Well, broadly speaking, the Watch provides an export of Pro Metronome functionality without the bother of dealing with a handheld device. Why is this useful? As a musician, I'm sure you could probably appreciate the utility of having both hands freed up to play while still benefitting from pioneering technology in real time.
The most significant features are:
Stage Mode: The screen flashes to the set tempo. Use this as a visual aid to get a sense of the beat - essential for the performing musician. If you're on stage, you can use the Apple Watch to 'flash' the tempo of the next song, allowing you to smoothly transition between songs while remaining extremely precise.
TAP: Tap function. By tapping a beat on the Watch, the app can calculate the BPM. This is far more intuitive and convenient than on a handheld device. If you're struck with sudden inspiration, you can instantly tap it in!
The Pro Metronome Watch application of course allows full interconnectivity. Change the playback settings and sync your playlists across devices.
Unfortunately, we've been forced to work within the parameters of technical possibility, as governed by Apple's API settings. What this means is that some cool, pertinent features for a wearable musicians device have had to be postponed until the next version. As of right now, our app like all others will not be able to include features such as vibration, gesture or microphone functionality.
Don't be too disheartened though, if the timetables of every other successful technological product are to be believed, it is only a matter of time until Apple opens up more API. Indeed, with Android Wear beating its chest in the wearables market, this will probably come much sooner than later. Watch this space.
Pro Metronome can be downloaded from Apple App Store and Google Play Store for free, and is a universal app for iPone, iPod touch, iPad and other android devices.
